How to Dry Herbs

Drying herbs is a great way to preserve their flavor and aroma for later use in cooking, baking, and herbal remedies. Whether you have an abundance of herbs from your own garden or have purchased fresh herbs at the grocery store, drying them properly is key to ensuring their quality. Here is a step-by-step guide to drying herbs at home.

Step 1: Choose the Right Herbs

Not all herbs are suitable for drying. Herbs with high moisture content, such as basil and cilantro, do not dry well and are best used fresh. Herbs with low moisture content, such as rosemary, thyme, and oregano, are excellent for drying.

Step 2: Prepare the Herbs for Drying

Before drying the herbs, it’s important to properly prepare them. Wash the herbs in cold water to remove any dirt or debris. Pat the herbs dry with paper towels or a clean cloth. If the herbs have flowers or seed heads, remove these as they will not dry well and can affect the flavor of the dried herbs.

Step 3: Choose Your Drying Method

There are several methods for drying herbs, including air-drying, oven-drying, and microwave-drying. Air-drying is the most traditional method and involves tying the herbs into bunches and hanging them upside down in a dry, well-ventilated area. Oven-drying involves spreading the herbs on a baking sheet and drying them in a low-heat oven. Microwave-drying involves spreading the herbs on a paper towel and microwaving them on low power in short intervals.

Step 4: Dry the Herbs

Once you have chosen your drying method, follow the instructions carefully. When air-drying, ensure that the bunches of herbs are not touching each other and are hanging in an area that is free from direct sunlight and moisture. When oven-drying, place the baking sheet in the oven and dry the herbs at the lowest heat setting for 2-3 hours or until they are completely dry and brittle. When microwave-drying, microwave the herbs in short intervals, checking them every 30 seconds, until they are dry and brittle.

Step 5: Store the Dried Herbs

Once the herbs are fully dry, remove them from the stems and store them in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Dried herbs will keep for up to a year if stored properly.
